The Importance of Claiming Sacred Space at Home

Time to read: 4 min

Is this you?

So you're looking to create some sacred space at home, but don't know where to start. Raise your hand if you feel like this is currently you, or you’ve felt this at some point in time:

I feel like I don't have proper space at home to...thrive.

You are not alone. This is a universal challenge.

Claiming sacred space at home can take...effort. While it might be harder for people who live with others - such as partners, roommates, and kids...it’s also a universal challenge.

People who live alone experience this too!

Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room. Claiming sacred space is done by intentionally uncovering self-limiting beliefs. Some self limiting beliefs might be;

📦 Once my roommate moves out then I can write more because I won’t be caught in small talk conversations.

Once I tidy up my living room then I can do yoga because I’ll have more space to spread out.

📖 Once my kids go off to daycare then I can organize my finances because I’ll have the energy to focus.

⚡️Once I clean my house then I can focus on my hobbies because I’ll no longer have a nagging feeling pulling at me to get these tasks done.

There will always be something that needs attention in the home...but what if you made yourself a priority sometimes?

While overcoming challenges in order for your optimum conditions to be met are valid...

...they don’t necessarily have to be total roadblocks for you to get you to your goal in finding sacred space.

If you do feel prohibited in your daily life, it’s possible that there’s an imbalance at home. Something is pulling you out of the place in which you operate best.

Sometimes these distractions aren't necessarily something to eliminate or overcome, but it’s something to manage. Especially if you cohabitate with others.

Chances are, there isn’t a sacred space at home for you to retreat to, that embodies who you are, what you resonate with, or that carves that sacred space out that proclaims: “it's time for self care".

And, regardless of whether or not you're introverted or extroverted, we all need alone time to recharge. A sacred space in the home that we can claim as our own. An area that won't be filled with clutter from others.

Sacred space is wellness.

If you don’t have a sacred space at home that you can go to for specific practices...that are just for YOU...

...then it's time to find one.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a large space. It can be a corner of a room decorated with items that uplift and inspire you.

Sacred space can be a favorite reading chair that you curl up into to get lost in your latest read. Sacred space can also be outdoor area where you lay down your yoga mat. A sacred space. Dedicated just for you.

When you learn to hold sacred space for yourself at home, you begin to create a special self care energy that your brain associates with that dedicated space.

Have you ever had a long stressful day and on your drive home, you immediately feel a sense of relief when turning the corner, just blocks away from home?

That’s your brain associating that it’s “me” time. Time to let go and relax. Imagine if you dropped into a deeper layer than that, once you’re at home?

Instead of all of these conditions having to be met in order for you to step into your creative flow, that sacred space can be available to you. Now, every time you walk past that space, you can reclaim your personal energy at home.

Ready to take the next steps on creating more sacred space for yourself at home? Here are a few tips;

1) Carve out time for the "big purge" AKA...a decluttering day, weekend, or month.

Depending on the specifics of your home and the items you own, decluttering can be a big project. Do what you can, but calendar the time in to make this happen. In doing so, you'll clear out some space. Sometimes this can be the difference between having no sacred space and having some sacred space.

2) Instead of buying a new piece of furniture or containers to organize, repurpose what you own.

Wait until you declutter to see what you have. You'd be surprised at what you might find in the depths of your home. Items that have gathered dust, might be able to be cleaned up and be used as an altar or a painting cabinet.

3) Initiate mindful conversations with your household.

Expressing your needs and understanding the needs of those you live with is a huge step in creating sacred space for everyone. Use "I" statements and speak up for what you need. Getting everyone on board and having a mutual understanding of which spaces are shared and which are personal sacred spaces can be empowering.

4) Dedicate time on the calendar for sacred space.

After going through all of these steps to make a sacred space for yourself at home...it's now time to actually utilize this sacred space. This might seem like a no-brainer depending on the usage of a space or the dedicated hobby or task, you're choosing to work on. But many of us often forget to enjoy the sacred space that we've created.

Try a recurring spot in your calendar to dedicate time to enjoy your sacred space!
